White Water Rafts

Rafts were originally the simplest form of man’s transportation in water and were then made of several logs fastened together. Now inflatable boats are used as rafts. The inflatable rafts consist of very durable, multi-layered rubberized or vinyl fabrics with several independent air chambers. The length can vary between 3.5 m (11 ft) and 6 m (20 ft), the width between 1.8 m (6 ft) and 2.5 m (8 ft).

Rafts come in a few different forms. In Europe the most common is the symmetrical raft steered with a paddle at the stern. Other types are the asymmetrical, rudder-controlled raft and the symmetrical raft with central helm (oars). Rafts are usually propelled with ordinary paddles and typically hold 4 to 12 persons. Catamaran style rafts have become popular in the western United States as well, but are typically rowed instead of paddled. These vessels are more widely used by fishermen to access smaller Lochs and still waters.

White water rafting is also commonly referred to as river rafting and has gained tremendous popularity over the years, not just in Scotland but in several other parts of the world. It is an exciting, adrenaline pumping outdoor sport.

It makes no difference if you are just beginning, you don’t have to swim and there is a guide with you in the raft who looks after you. Rafting is much more fun in a group, persuade some friends to join you in this new adventure.
River rafting involves the paddling of boats or rafts (that are inflatable) and steering them down a river in the midst of swirling waters.

Usually the rapids are classified based on the conditions of the water, ranging from 1-6. These grades indicate an increase in the intensity and difficulty as the numbers go up. Rapids categorized under 1 are mainly recommended for children and beginners and those above 5 are dangerous and not meant for leisure rafting.
